We have a walker!!!

A few days before he turned 15 months, Kellen finally took his own, very brave, first steps. Granted, he's still only taking 2 or 3 steps at a time...but that's not what's important. What's important is that he's finally WALKING! He has finally overcome his fear and now actually WANTS to walk.

Our daycare provider claims that he would've walked sooner had we just pushed him harder when he was younger, but I'm not the pushy type and didn't want to force him to do something he was scared of. Maybe she is right, and that he would've walked one or two months ago had we forced the issue, but I'd rather him learn the skill on his own, when he's ready, than have him ticked at us because we keep pushing him to do something he doesn't want to do yet.

Kellen had his 15 month appointment a few days early, and when I asked the Dr. what he thought about Kellen walking late, he had something like this to say..."Well, he's definitely at the later end of normal, but he's normal. He'll probably never be an Olympic athlete, but he's normal." Umm...excuse me? Who are you, limiting my son from going to the Olympics because he walked a couple months past the average time? Seriously, some of these Dr.s really have a lot of nerve!

Anyway, I'm going to celebrate, because my baby boy is finally ready to be a walker! Kellen, if you want to go to the Olympics, go for it!! Who cares what that stupid, crazy doctor said!

  1. Congrats to Kellen for his first steps!! You must be one proud mama. I don't think there is anything wrong with letting him start walking when he was ready. It doesn't seem right to force them if they don't want to, you know?

And that doctor! It is not his place to tell any of his patients what they can or can't be with their lives. What in the heck does walking at 15 months have to do with being an athlete anyways? Silliest correlation I've ever heard. Doctors can be so intelligent but so socially awkward sometimes.

    Anyways, goooo Kellen!

  2. YAH Kellen! That is awesome - those first steps are some you will never forget. And Colton was a very late walker and he is doing awesome in atheletics now so that Doctor is completely nuts. You should be sure to keep track of him though so that when Kellen is in the 2030 Olympics he can send that doctor a note saying "Booya, look at me now"!!

  3. Well, in the Olympics they have other competitions besides early walking. (Do they even have that?)

Swimming is good. Archery. Hockey. Curling. That high speed ice tube thing.

John didn't really learn to read until he was ten, even though he walked at 8 months.

It's ALL GOOD. No worries. love, Val

  4. Yay! Not sure how I missed this post...sorry for the late comment! I can't believe his doctor would say that to you though! Ridiculous. And I agree with you on not pushing him...I pushed/bribed Isla to crawl, and she started around 6 months, but I always felt a little guilty :) I let her figure out the walking thing on her own!

Also, something is up with the commenting again man. I was told I didn't have access to comment on yours or Lisa's blog. So I had to sign in under my AIM name which is pretty ridiculous. Don't judge the name. It's obvs from 1999.
